TERM 3 - WEEK 9
Front Cover - 3/4 Brown

This term in 3/4 LB we have been learning how to write a procedure. We have been building knowledge of all of the elements that build a procedural text.
We have been developing our understanding of the purpose and audience of a procedure and we have spent time learning about the headings and subheadings used in a procedure including aim, materials, and method.
We created a procedure to instruct us on how to make fairy bread. We then used a partner’s procedure and followed their method to make fairy bread. We would like to share with you some photos from our fairy bread-making lesson.

Leadership
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students, and Friends of St Thomas More,
Welcome to the season of Spring! We have been most fortunate in enjoying some glorious, sunny weather following a very cold and wet winter. This week, classes have observed and participated in activities related to two significant days in the yearly calendar, one being the International Day of Peace and the other World Gratitude Day. We are now moving towards the end of term and look forward to further events including the Catholic Schools Music Festival, an excursion to Shedley Theatre to view St Columba’s Lion King performance, and the T-ball carnival.

Learning Conversations
It was wonderful to see so many families attend Learning Conversations last week and we would like to thank you for making the time to come and meet with your child’s teacher. These conversations provide the opportunity to learn more about your child’s academic, emotional, and social development and discuss goals set to further their learning. Your input into these discussions is greatly appreciated. If you have not had the opportunity to attend the Learning Conversations last week and would like to meet with your child’s teacher, please make contact to organise a time convenient for you all.
Volunteers
At St Thomas More School, we acknowledge that all volunteers hold a very special place within our community. The knowledge, skills, commitment and time that volunteers share with us is greatly valued. We are committed to providing a safe working environment for all volunteers and therefore provide the opportunities and support for obtaining the necessary certification and training to act as a volunteer. This requirement is designed to ensure our students are protected and safe at school. Volunteering roles are varied and can include:
- Working in the school canteen or Library
- Attending school excursions and sporting carnivals
- Assisting on Sports Day with events
- Becoming a School Board member.
If you are interested in volunteering within our school community, please enquire at the front office for information about the application process.
Before and After School Duty of Care
To ensure the safety of all our students and families on site we remind you all about our before and after school yard protocols.
Before school (8.30am – 8.45am)
The only areas students can be in at this time include:
- Large oval
- Nature play and swing
- Basketball courts
Students are reminded not to access the playgrounds, ninja course, and sandpit at this time.
After school, Students are reminded not to play on the large oval or on any other play equipment.
We thank you for your continued support in this matter, ensuring the safety of your children.

Sun Smart
In line with our Sun Smart school policy, all students are required to wear their hats next term. Please ensure that your child has a school hat, labelled with their name to wear. If students do not have a hat, they will need to remain under the shelter area during sports and play times.
End of Term Casual Day
Friday 29 September is the last day of Term 3. On this day students are invited to wear casual clothes or sports clothes related to their favourite sports teams. A gold coin donation is appreciated, which will go to supporting the work of Catherine House.

End of Term School Assembly
The Reception MT class will have the opportunity to host the last assembly for the term in Week 10, Friday 29 September. The Assembly will commence at 9.00 am and we look forward to having you join us at this time.
We wish you all an enjoyable and safe holiday break. We look forward to meeting up again in our last term for the school year commencing on Tuesday 17 October.

International Day of Peace
September 21 was International Day for World Peace. This was established by the United Nations in 1982. It is a day when individuals, communities, nations, and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace. Ms. Docchio led our schools in prayer through Microsoft Teams when we gathered this week on Thursday morning.
Mercy Day
Mercy Day is celebrated on September 24 each year. We celebrated Mercy Day on Wednesday, September 20 with a whole school liturgy and class activities. This is an important celebration for all of us who belong to schools founded by the sisters of Mercy. It is also a day to remember and give thanks for the life of Catherine McAuley. On this day in 1827, Catherine’s House of Mercy in Baggot Street in Dublin was opened.
In our celebrations this year we think about how we live our call to be merciful people by reaching out to help others. Over the last few weeks, we have been collecting toiletry items to make gift bags for the women supported through Catherine House. Catherine House is an organisation in the city that offers crisis, longer-term accommodation, and support services for women experiencing homelessness in South Australia. Catherine House Inc was started in 1988, by the sisters of Mercy to address an unmet need for women experiencing homelessness in Adelaide. Like Catherine McAuley, Catherine House volunteers work to support women and children in need. Catherine House can now accommodate up to 59 women. We will continue to collect items for the remainder of the term. You can drop donations in the basket inside your child’s classroom. See the flyer attached.

Classroom Learning
Ms. Harros and our new reception students have been learning about prayer. They are learning about some of the symbols we place on our prayer space including the bible, candle, and cross. Students enjoy working together to set the prayer space in the classroom each day.

Liturgical Calendar Information
Special celebrations that we focus on during classroom and whole school prayer throughout term 3 and those that come up in our liturgical calendar include:
24/9 Mercy Day
27/9 St. Vincent De Paul
