TERM 3 - WEEK 1
Front Cover - 3/4 Morgado

Cereal Box Promotion Assignment
During our Literacy lessons, we have learnt that Advertisements are a special type of persuasive writing. Their purpose is to sell a product or a service. Our class 3/4 CM had an opportunity to view cereal boxes marketed to children and to adults. We analysed the design of the cereal boxes in terms of visual images, use of colour, lettering, message, and intended audience. We used what we have learned about cereal box advertising to create our own cereal box.
Our task was to create and report on your own brand of cereal and complete the following:
1. Create your own cereal brand and the actual box for it.
- Come up with a name for the cereal.
- Design the box to reflect the type of cereal and make sure to include two types of consumer sales promotion that will be outlined on the front of the cereal box.
- Include all normal parts that you might find on a cereal box (e.g. company, size, nutritional information, etc.)
2. Complete a Powerpoint presentation that addresses the following:
- Who is the target market? Why? Explain how your cereal box is designed for or reflective of this target audience.
- Describe the consumer sales promotion placed on your box. What types of sales promotions did you use? How would it attract your target audience?
Leadership
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and friends of St Thomas More,
Welcome to Term 3!
We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. The students appear relaxed and excited to be back at school and it was great to hear some of their holiday stories. Holidays are always a great opportunity for everyone to recharge their batteries and Term 3 looks like being a very exciting and busy term!
A special welcome to new students and their families at St Thomas More School. We hope their association at St Thomas More School will be a rewarding and enjoyable experience in our school/parish community.
Whilst we have enjoyed a great start to the term, unfortunately, we now find ourselves in another lockdown as we respond to the increase in COVID-19 cases in our State. Our staff have been very busy planning and preparing for the continuation of learning and we have provided information for families in preparation for this. Please continue to view our school website and the CESA website links for further information as well as the Seesaw App to continue to be informed about your child’s learning program. We realise that this can be a daunting time but please be reassured that as a school we will be there alongside you to support you in any way we can. We trust that we will return to our regular routine next Wednesday and in the interim please take care and stay safe.
First Semester Reports
Last term, teachers were busy writing reports that are evidence-based and capture the entire learning achieved by your child/ren during their first semester of school this year. We had the pleasure of reading each child’s report and gaining a greater understanding of their growth and development.
One of the areas we take particular note of is a child’s efforts. Children receive a grade for achievement and for ‘application to learning’ (effort). This is provided for each subject area and compliments the ‘Achievement' grade, informing you about your child’s efforts in their approach to learning. At St Thomas More School, our staff continually encourage students to ‘Strive for Excellence’ which highlights the importance of trying their best, regardless of their knowledge or interest level in a particular subject area.
We thank our teachers for their efforts in writing these reports and hope you have celebrated your child’s/children’s achievements. In moving forward, it is important to also speak with your child about the importance of setting personal learning goals for the remainder of the year.
Staffing News
We welcome back to St Thomas More School Ms. Lisa Crossley, from her Long Service Leave.
Mrs. Sandra Shephard will be on Long Service Leave for the first two weeks of Term 3, beginning Monday 19 July and returning 2 August. We wish Sandra a safe and enjoyable break with family and friends and look forward to her return.
Student Punctuality and Attendance
When children begin school they develop learning habits. These learning habits continue to develop throughout each learning year and these habits can affect learning achievements. Two important habits and life skills are attendance and punctuality. Very few people can argue with the correlation between attendance and school achievement. There is empirical evidence at a state, national and international level to prove that this relationship is true but, closer to home, our own achievement data and student report information clearly demonstrate that, as a general rule, the more time students spend at school, the better they will do.
We need to maximise every day to get full value – this means turning up to school every day and on time. When students arrive late and take time to settle, valuable learning time is lost. When students are absent from school they miss work (which they seldom make up) and also miss important interactions with their peers.
It is now commonplace for children to stay away from school for reasons that would have been unheard of 20 years ago. These include:
- Their own or a sibling’s birthday
- Stayed up too late watching TV
- Going shopping for clothes
- An extended long weekend
- Not wishing to participate in a sports day, special school event or excursion
This sends a strong message to children that their parents neither value learning nor the school experiences. It is difficult to resist the persistent pressure that children can exert on parents, but parents need to be strong and send their children to school every day, on time and ready to make the most of school experiences.
In conclusion, it is reassuring to know that parents increase their children’s chances of future success just by making sure they turn up to school every day. This important habit of regular school attendance also prepares young people for the workforce where it is expected that they turn up each day ready for work! Absentee notification – please ring the front office by 9.00 am.

NAIDOC Week
As a school, we gathered in prayer during the last week of term 2 to celebrate NAIDOC Week with the theme Heal Country! Heal our Nation! We reflected on how we might begin to heal the country by embracing First
Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country and see them as equal to the cultures and values of all Australians.
As I was preparing the liturgy I reflected on some words that Mihali and Anzac said earlier in the week before they lead a smoking ceremony that I thought connected with the reading chosen for the day. They said ‘part of doing the smoking ceremony was to help bring us all closer together as one’. The reading we used spoke to us about our need for unity and about living in harmony with each other.
So, I wonder…
How can we work to live in harmony with each other?
If we can work on this within our own school community it might become easier to transfer this learning in our wider community.
Lesley Giles
We were very fortunate to have guest artist Lesley Giles perform at our Liturgy. Lesley, an artist who has made thousands of didgeridoos over the years, has also been part of the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute running performances promoting Aboriginal culture. He described the didgeridoo as, "more than just a rhythm-making instrument, it’s a storytelling instrument,”
Lesley introduced the didgeridoo to the students, speaking about his experience in learning to play it as well as protocols for how it is used. He played the didgeridoo using the different sounds made to tell stories which the students, staff and families all enjoyed hearing.

Feast of St. Mary Magdalene
Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene.
Mary Magdalene was one of the people who had the courage to stay with Jesus at the foot of the cross at the crucifixion. She was the first witness to the resurrection and was given the role of telling the apostles that Jesus had risen and because of this she was given the title ‘apostle to the apostles’. She was a friend of Jesus and she travelled with him listening and learning about what it means to bring God’s promise to the world.
This week we pray for the students and families at St. Mary Magdalene’s School.
